Utahns should assess flood risk and insurance now, emergency management says

FRUIT HEIGHTS, Utah (ABC4) — In the quiet foothills of Fruit Heights, what looks like a regular neighborhood road is actually a dry gulch and a regulatory floodway. This is just one of many areas in Utah where flood risks can sneak up fast and leave homeowners with a mountain of repair costs.

As spring temperatures rise, so does the risk. Peak runoff in Utah typically arrives in late May and early June, and emergency officials say now is the time to take action before it’s too late.

Utah is EQ Country - Drop Cover Hold On

This week’s earthquake in Summit County was felt across the Wasatch Front; a reminder that Utah is earthquake country. When the shaking starts, remember these three steps:

DROP to your hands and knees
COVER your head and neck, and crawl under a table or desk if possible
HOLD ON to the cover until the shaking stops

Practice this regularly with your family and coworkers. When an earthquake hits, you won't have time to think, so make sure you’re prepared!

Utah is EQ Country - Home Hazard

Last week’s earthquake shook homes across the Wasatch Front. Take 30 minutes this weekend to do a Home Hazard Hunt and prevent damage during the next earthquake:

✓ Secure water heater to wall studs with metal strapping
✓ Anchor heavy furniture (bookcases, TVs, dressers)
✓ Move heavy items to lower shelves
✓ Secure mirrors and picture frames
✓ Install latches on cabinets

The water heater is especially important - if it tips over during shaking, it can rupture your gas line and cause a fire. Strapping kits are available at most hardware stores.

Small actions now prevent big problems later. Find your Home Hazard Hunt checklist at BeReadyUtah.gov

🌍 Did you know Utah has experienced devastating earthquakes? 🏚️

On November 13, 1901, an estimated 6.5+ magnitude earthquake struck Richfield, Utah — one of the most powerful earthquakes in state history!

CDC’s Influenza Risk Assessment Tool (IRAT)

An IRAT is used to evaluate the future pandemic potential of an influenza A virus currently circulating in animals. Experts review data and score a representative flu virus based on the likelihood that the virus may gain the ability to spread easily from person-to-person. Experts also score the virus on the impact that it could have on public health. IRAT scores may be updated when there are important changes to virus characteristics, like the ability to infect a new kind...
